Gippsland Ports has been delegated the responsibilities to manage five local ports and four waterways on behalf of the Victorian Government.
The waterways under management total approximately 1,430 sq km of some of the largest and most beautiful waterways in Australia, and stretch over 720 kms from Anderson Inlet to Mallacoota on the south-eastern coastline of Victoria.
Each of the ports and waterways under Gippsland Ports’ management are economically and socially important communities, commercial centres, tourism destinations or a combination of all of these.
Gippsland Ports’ responsibilities include boating safety and the management of vessel activities on the waters under its control; navigation; port operations; regulation; compliance; maritime security; incident management and emergency response; salvage; dredging and sand management, and minimalizing the risk of environmental damage from the operation of vessels.
Gippsland Ports provides navigational safety and port infrastructure that includes boating facilities; navigation aids and signage; boat lifting and vessel servicing facilities and dredging operations that service recreational boating, tourism, charter operators, commercial vessels, professional fishing, and other marine and offshore industries.
Gippsland Ports’ Harbour Master is based at Lakes Entrance and there are local managers and marine officers based at depots and offices at Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Paynesville and Port Welshpool.
