Local Navigation Warning No.13 of 2022 Port of Gippsland Lakes Thomson River – Tree Navigation Hazard DATE:  17 November 2022 DETAILS:  Mariners are advised that a very large River Gum Tree has been dislodged by floodwater from the western bank of the Thomson River, approximately 100 metres downstream of the confluence of the Thomson River and Sale Canal. (See attached google map position reference).  The River Gum root system remains embedded in the western bank and the tree lies mostly submerged and across at least 75% of the river width. Floodwater is still running at approximately 5 knots. Gippsland Ports advises that works to remove or minimise the tree hazard shall not be attempted until floodwaters ease and the river height falls to an acceptable level to allow safe access.  Flood Warnings remain current for the Thomson and Latrobe Rivers. The river heights are at capacity level and flooding over low lying banks in this area. Gippsland Ports will monitor river heights for further Warnings and Notices. In the meantime, Mariners are reminded that debris caused by flood water including large trees and timbers may find its way downstream and affect the safe navigation of vessels within all Gippsland Rivers and Lake systems. Mariners should take extra precaution if it is necessary to operate vessels in rivers and creeks during flood events and be aware of the possible presence of new debris hazards and changed navigation conditions.
